Title: Recreational Activities
Author:
Comments: This dataset contains locations of many different forms of recreational marine activities that have been sourced from various online sources for use during the South-East Marine Protection Planning Forum. The Surf breaks dataset shows locations where surfing is popular enough that online surf forecasts have been generated. These locations were sourced from a variety of web sites which provide conditions forecasts specifically for surfers, these forecasts included estimates of swell height, wind direction and swell direction. The surf breaks of national significance are identified in Schedule 1 of the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement (NZCPS) 2010. Policy 16 of the NZCPS states the surf breaks of national significance are to be protected by: a. ensuring that activities in the coastal environment do not adversely affect the surf breaks; and b. avoiding adverse effects of other activities on access to, and use and enjoyment of the surf breaks. Surf Life Saving New Zealand Inc. (SLSNZ) is the national association representing 74 Surf Life Saving Clubs in New Zealand. There are five SLSNZ clubs within the Otago marine protection planning area; Kaka Point, Brighton, St Clair, St Kilda and Warringtion. SLSNZ clubs have been operating in New Zealand since 1910 and provide beach patrols at popular swimming beaches during most of the summer months. SLSNZ clubs also host youth and adult surf life saving teams that compete in inter-club competitions. Club houses are locations where a marine based recreational clubs are located. The type of activities each club focuses on ranges from Rowing, Yachting, Boating, Diving and Fishing. The locations shown in this dataset are indicative only and may refer to general areas rather than point localities. This dataset is not a complete representation of every location suitable for marine recreation activities.
