Title: Female Sea Lion Foraging 2008-2010
Author:
Comments: NZ sealions (Phocarctos hookeri) were once found right along the New Zealand coastline until excessive hunting pressure confined their breeding range to the sub-Antarctic Islands. In 1994 a single female sea lion founded a new breeding population on the Otago Peninsular, the only current sea lion breeding site on the New Zealand mainland. New Zealand sea lions are currently listed as 'Nationally Critical' under the New Zealand threat classification, the highest possible ranking within this classification system.
As part of a PhD, study Amelie Auge fitted resident female sea lions with satellite tracking tags and recorded movements during the Autumn months of 2008, 2009 and 2010. The recorded locations allowed for the calculation of key foraging areas used by the sea lions during the different years. This dataset is based on the satellite data collected during this study and was created by digitising maps within a publication by Auge et al. (2012, Predicting interactions between recolonising marine mammals and fisheries: defining precautionary management, Figure 1). See the above publication and the PhD thesis of A. Auge (2010) for more information relating to data collection, analysis and limitations relating to the raw data. The Foraging Areas values represent the results from a kernel density analysis; '95% kernel range' indicates almost the entire foraging range of the study animals and '65% kernel range' indicates the core foraging range. Land areas were excluded from the analysis. This dataset is based on a low resolution image from within a published document. Spatial errors may have occured during the digitisation process and boundaries are indicative only. This dataset has an estimated accuracy of between 500m and 1000m. Due the the low quality and scale of the original image, boundaries within estuarine areas have lower accuracy. This dataset only relates to to foraging behaviour of the female sea lions included within the study period and does not represent the foraging behaviour of every individual sea lion using the area or the behaviour of animals during a different time of the year. The foraging areas from all three years (2008, 2009, and 2010) where overlapped in order to combine them to form this dataset.
