Comments: The data in this shapefile represent the area of the seabed in NZ EEZ waters under 1600 m deep that was contacted by trawl gear between 1989-90 and 2004-05. It is derived from Ministry of Fisheries commercial trawl fisheries data from 16 fishing years (1 October-30 September for 1989-90 to 2004-05). Data were collected on Trawl Catch Effort Processing Return (TCEPR) forms which record the start and finish positions of tows to the nearest minute (a resolution of 1.852 km) and represented trawl effort with seafloor contact. Each trawl trackline was converted to a polygon using an assigned doorspread value. These were overlaid onto a 5x5 km cell grid in GIS and dissolved to obtain the area of seabed contacted by trawls (the footprint). This work was completed as one part of the output for BEN200601and is summarised by Baird et al. (2009).
