Layer: Miscellaneous Mangroves Seagrass (ID: 0)

Name: Miscellaneous Mangroves Seagrass

Display Field: CommonName

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: This dataset has been compiled primarily from regional council datasets but also some from DOC and other agencies. The aim is to build a comprehensive spatial and temporal habitat layer for this species nationwide. This layer comprises mangrove (Avicennia marina) polygon data from regional councils and other involved parties across New Zealand and was collated with the intentions of identifying spatial patterns, creating a baseline national layer for Mangroves in order to begin mapping temporal changes and identifying levels of protection for this valuable resource.Legend:Present:Any polygons found within other data sets that were assigned a class/habitat/type/vegetation type/substrate type relating to mangroves either by symbol or by latin name or other distinguishable name were considered to be polygons delineating areas with mangroves present. They were included into the National Mangroves Layer and given a density of present indicating that mangroves were growing in the area the polygon represented.High:Areas of high mangrove density were incorporated into this category. The category 'High' was a common denominator from all the data sets received from councils. It signifies a density of above 50% of the area that teh polygons represent.Medium:Areas of medium mangrove density were incorporated into this category. The category 'Med' was a common denominator from all the data sets reveived from councils. This category signifies that of the area represented by the polygons of interest, 20-50% of the that area is covered by mangroves.Low:Areas of low mangrove density were incorporated into this category. The category 'Low' was a common denominator from all the data sets received from councils. This category signifies that of the area represented by the polygons of interest, only 20% of the area is covered by mangroves

Copyright Text: This project was run by the Department of Conservation under the supervision of Helen Kettles. The respective data management was done by Robert Besaans. Data was sourced from Regional and District councils, external agencies and internally through the Department of Conservation. Thanks go out to Regional Councils, Local District Councils, Agencies and other involved parties for their exceedingly efficient cooperation and facilitation in the production of this layer.
