Comments: The number of reef fishes (species richness) occurring on shallow rocky reefs in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park was estimated from data on the predicted occurrence and relative abundance of 72 reef fishes recorded from 467 SCUBA dives made around the North, South and Kermadec Islands over an 18 year period (Smith et al. 2013). Relationships between the number of reef fishes recorded at a site and a variety of environmental, geographic and dive-specific variables were statistically modelled using boosted regression trees (Smith et al. 2013). This model was then used to map predicted species richness around New Zealand using a 1km x 1 km grid. This data set has subsequently been clipped to the 50 m depth contour and cropped to the rocky reef layer developed for the Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan. As these data are modelled they provide an indication of broad patterns or trends likely to occur in species richness across the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. Actual species richness at particular rocky reef sites will be determined by fine scale variation in prevailing physical and biological environmental conditions, as well as historical and contemporary patterns of recruitment and disturbance. See Smith et al. (2013) for predicted distributions of particular species of fish.
