Comments: Zonation was used to model the representation of habitats and ecosystem services within the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.High, medium and low areas of each ecosystem service were used, to include the variation in potential delivery of the services across the Gulf.The analysed data layers were raster data (gridded cells) at a resolution of 200m2. Data included in the analysis:5 Biogenic Habitats (MPA Policy Habitats dataset)47 Physical habitats (Jackson, 2014)Ecosystem Services for Biogenic Habitats – 3 layers - high, medium and low service areas (Townsend and Thrush, 2010., Townsend et al. 2014)Ecosystem Services for Ecosystem Productivity – 3 layers - high, medium and low service areas (Townsend and Thrush, 2010., Townsend et al. 2014)Ecosystem Services for Nutrient Recycling – 3 layers - high, medium and low service areas (Townsend and Thrush, 2010., Townsend et al. 2014)To account for neighbourhood influences of connectivity or edge effects in the physical and biogenic habitat layers, a distribution smoothing function (5 km radius) was applied in Zonationto facilitate habitat connectivity. A matrix connectivity function - to recognise interactions between layers within each of the two habitat groups- was also specified. Within the physical habitat layers, shallow rocky reef layers and deep rocky reef layers were weighted 5- and 50-times higher than non-rocky reef layers, respectively. Finally, because the ecosystem services layers were modelled on ecological principles rather than empirical data, the overall group weightings of the physical habitat layers and the biogenic habitat layers were approximately 4 times greater than the overall weighting of the ecosystem services layers.
