Comments: Base-line multibeam bathymetry data in the vicinity of Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. The multibeam data acquired during this NIWA (TAN1211) survey provide maps of the seafloor, including the surroundings of Little Barrier Island, and areas not covered by previously acquired data.
This survey will act as a reference dataset for future voyages to determine the biodiversity of the area, and to aid in the analysis of the detailed geomorphic expression of tectonic and sedimentary processes. Funding for the RV Tangaroa sea days for this project was allocated out of the 2012/13 OS2020 (Ocean Survey 2020) programme. The funds for the science personnel, equipment and data processing were made available out of NIWA’s core science budgets. The initial plans for the project were to survey approximately 1,100 km2 of seafloor in 40m to 200m water depth using the Kongsberg EM302 multibeam echosounder fitted to RV Tangaroa. At the completion of the survey multibeam data had been acquired over the planned priority one area, plus additional reconnaissance transects into the inner Hauraki Gulf.
