Comments: The plan proposes 15 sites across the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park identified for their habitat and ecological values. Five areas - Mokohinau Islands, Tiritiri Matangi, Kawau, Motutapu / Rangitoto, and the Alderman Islands - were also agreed and recommended by the SWG as areas that would benefit from protection, but a decision was not reached on a single size, location, or shape for the Type 1 MPAs and which other type of protection would be applied. The SWG members arrived at two options for each of these areas, which include both Type 1 MPAs as well as Type 2 protection. A different option, at the Alderman Islands, is Scenario 2, which provides for an SMA (no commercial fishing with restricted recreational fishing) bordering a Type 1 MPA. As well, the Whangateau Harbour has two options for co-management between mana whenua and the local community. In order to gain consensus or sufficient support to select and progress one of the options, discussions with mana whenua and local communities will be required for all these areas.
