The Ecosystem Principles Approach (Townsend and Thrush 2010) was adapted and applied. Ecosystem Principles are key statements or rules that define hopw aspects of an ecosystem operate, summarising ecological information for an ecosystem service. The ecological principles provide insights into the ecosystem processes and attributes that underpin delivery of a service. Datasets of ecosystem principles were sourced for the Hauraki Gulf and the score for each principle ranges from 0-1 for every 200m2 cell across the Gulf, interpolated where data resolution was coarser, Higher scores indicate greater contribution to ecological functioning and service provision. The layers were weighted with respect to their importance in service generation, then added together to create the ecostystem service map. The ecosystem services maps produced in Townsend et al. (2012) contained 7 categories of potential service delivery. For the purposes of reporting, simplifications were requested in the mapscoring categories in a manner that still reflected spatial variation in potential service delivery across the Gulf.
